What is a Serving Slab?
A Serving Slab is a hand crafted, reclaimed stone serving tray, used to display your hors d'oeuvres or centerpieces in a unique way to you and your guests.
Most Serving Slabs are made of natural reclaimed stone countertops, either granite, marble, limestone or some are crushed glass or recycled stone pressed together. Thickness is typically 3cm (just over 1 inch) with a chiseled edge. Some reclaimed product we get is 2cm thick. Most surfaces are polished but some are honed finishes which is similar to a mat finish. They come in many different sizes and shapes, in fact they are like snowflakes, none are alike and all are unique. Each piece is one of a kind.
A Serving Slab has many uses, some of which are for serving cheese and crackers, sushi, hummis, chips and salsa, brie, used as a trivet. It can also be used as a piece of art in your home. The uses are almost limitless. Get in touch if you want to share your ideas, we're always interested!
A Serving Slab's feet are all natural river rock adhered to the bottom of the slab, and they stand about 1/2 inch to 1 inch tall. Felt is applied to each rock to protect surfaces. We hand select each set of rocks for every Serving Slab.
A Serving Slab is an all natural product, so particular care needs to be taken to not harm it. Please only use antibacterial soap and water to clean the stone. On a bi-annual basis (twice per year), the serving surface should be sealed with a granite/stone sealer to maintain the seal and beauty. You can obtain this kind of sealer from places like Home Depot, Lowes, True Value, etc.
NO! The Serving Slab is an all natural product and should not be exposed to microwave rays.
YES! The Serving Slab can be placed in a cold oven, the stone can warmed from room temperature slowly to a maximum of 170 degrees fahrenheit. Make sure to use potholders to get it out of the oven! Also be aware when heating it, the felt feet may come loose.
YES! The Serving Slab can be chilled from room temperature to help maintain the coolness of cheeses, sushi, fruits, veggies or anything else you want to keep chilled while being served. Often times you may want to prepare everything ahead of time, place it on the Serving Slab and place the entire thing in the fridge. Pull it out when your guests arrive and wallah, you're not stuck in the kitchen!
For many Serving Slabs, we include a bamboo spreader for you to show off when you serve hors d'oeuvres. The spreaders are certified organically grown and produced by a Fair Trade Organization. And did you know that bamboo is the most quickly renewable plant on earth? Yes it is.
What shapes do the Serving Slabs come in and can I get a specific shape made, such as the shape of the state of Texas?
Serving Slabs come in all kinds of shapes because of the nature of stone and the chiseling process. We can try but can not guarantee that the shape you request can be accomplished. Sometimes when the stone is chiseled, it can crack and separate at unwanted places rendering a specific shape null and void. It can get very expensive to accomplish this, and all special orders of this nature are priced on a case by case basis. We never say never!
Yes, we do this on a regular basis. Please contact us to discuss what you would like us to do for you.
